Sylvia: Standing Out in a Sea of Standard

How Sylvia’s Custom Booth Dominated the USA Gymnastics Trade Show

When hundreds of exhibitors converge at a major trade show, the challenge isn’t just being present—it’s being unforgettable. At the recent USA Gymnastics Trade Show in New Orleans, our client Sylvia proved that investing in a fully custom booth isn’t just smart marketing—it’s essential for serious business growth.

The Sea of Sameness

Walking through the exhibit hall in New Orleans, visitors encountered row after row of standard pipe-and-drape setups and basic pop-up displays. While these cookie-cutter solutions might save money upfront, they also guarantee one thing: invisibility. In an industry where first impressions can make or break business relationships, blending into the background is the kiss of death.

Sylvia understood this from day one.

Custom Design, Custom Results

Our team worked closely with Sylvia to create a booth that didn’t just showcase their products—it told their story. Every element was purposefully designed to reflect their brand values and connect with their target audience of gymnastics coaches, gym owners, and equipment buyers.

The impact was immediate:

  • Increased foot traffic: While neighboring booths struggled to draw visitors, Sylvia’s custom space created natural stopping points that encouraged exploration
  • Extended conversations: The thoughtfully designed layout provided comfortable spaces for meaningful discussions, turning quick glances into qualified leads
  • Professional credibility: The polished, custom appearance instantly communicated that Sylvia is an established, serious player in the gymnastics industry
  • Photo opportunities: Attendees naturally wanted to photograph and share images of the striking booth, extending Sylvia’s reach beyond the show floor

The Power of Being Different

What struck us most during the three-day event was how Sylvia’s booth became a landmark. Other exhibitors were giving directions like “we’re two booths down from the big custom setup” and attendees were using it as a meeting point. This kind of organic brand recognition is impossible to achieve with standard displays.

The custom booth also allowed Sylvia to:

  • Properly showcase their full product line without cramming everything into a small space
  • Create distinct areas for different types of conversations
  • Incorporate interactive elements that engaged visitors
  • Display their brand personality in three dimensions

Investment vs. Expense

While a fully custom booth requires a larger upfront investment than standard options, Sylvia’s results prove it’s not an expense—it’s a multiplier. The booth has already paid for itself through the connections made and deals initiated in New Orleans, and it will continue generating returns at future shows.

More importantly, the booth positions Sylvia as a premium brand worth doing business with. In an industry where trust and reliability are paramount, looking the part is half the battle.

The Competitive Advantage

As we packed up after the show, it was clear that Sylvia had achieved something their competitors hadn’t: they had become the memorable exhibitor. While other companies blended into the background noise of the trade show floor, Sylvia’s investment in custom booth design had transformed them into the obvious choice for serious buyers.

In a world where standing out is increasingly difficult, sometimes the best strategy is also the most straightforward: be willing to do what others won’t.

How Did LO&CO Stand Out at ICFF with a Custom Trade Show Booth?

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) is one of the most influential design events in the world, drawing top architects, interior designers, and product manufacturers. For LO&CO, it was an opportunity to showcase their innovative approach to design and make a lasting impression. Our team built a custom trade show booth that reflected their refined aesthetic and positioned their brand for maximum impact at this high-profile event.

Understanding LO&CO’s Vision

LO&CO wanted more than just a standard booth. They needed a branded trade show experience that captured their design philosophy and engaged industry leaders. The goal was to create a welcoming, design-forward space that invited visitors to explore and connect with their products in a meaningful way.

Designing for the ICFF Audience

ICFF attendees expect cutting-edge trade show booth design with attention to detail and craftsmanship. Every element of the LO&CO booth had to align with their premium brand image while standing out in a hall full of world-class designers. Our design approach focused on:

  • Clean Lines and Modern Materials: A combination of sleek finishes and natural textures to complement LO&CO’s product collection.
  • Functional Flow: An open, accessible layout that guided attendees naturally through display areas.
  • Brand Messaging: Strategic signage and integrated lighting to reinforce LO&CO’s identity throughout the booth.

The Build Process

We began by meeting with LO&CO to understand their goals for ICFF and how their booth needed to perform on the show floor. Our team suggested strategic design adjustments to improve efficiency and ease of installation without compromising their vision.

Once LO&CO approved the shop drawings and 3D renders, our millwork shop built each component with precision and care. This streamlined process ensured the booth was ready for a smooth, efficient installation and a flawless show debut.

The Result at ICFF

The completed booth captured attention, driving steady visitor traffic and encouraging interaction with the LO&CO product line. By combining custom trade show booth design with high-quality craftsmanship, LO&CO made a lasting impression at ICFF and strengthened its position as a forward-thinking design brand.

A custom trade show booth is more than just a temporary display. It is an extension of a company’s brand identity and values. For LO&CO at ICFF, our team delivered a design-driven solution that elevated their presence and connected them with an audience that values innovation and quality.

ICFF 2025: Inside the Submaterial Booth Build

Submaterial’s presence at ICFF 2025 was made unforgettable thanks to a uniquely engineered booth, constructed in collaboration with David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the process and standout design elements that brought this vision to life—straight from the trade show floor at New York’s Javits Center.

Precision Engineering for a Modular Design Language

Submaterial’s product line is deeply modular, so the booth had to reflect that. To support this, David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd. created custom corners and angled walls that gave the installation a more intimate feel while cleverly maximizing the small footprint. The left side of the booth echoed the scale and layout of Submaterial’s swatch booklet from Material Bank, while the central wall displayed a full-scale 6×6 module of their Diade series. From a single tile to full compositions, the entire booth was an extension of Submaterial’s design philosophy.

From Studio to Show Floor: Pre-Installation in the Shop

To ensure a smooth setup during the short trade show window, all artwork was pre-installed at David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd.’s shop. This included mounting, testing configurations, repackaging, and delivering the full installation to the ICFF floor. This behind-the-scenes precision dramatically reduced on-site stress and setup time. After the show, the Flatt team dismantled everything and transported it back to their facility—a full-service experience from start to finish.

Material Innovation on Display

Submaterial used ICFF as an opportunity to debut pieces that played with new material combinations. While they’re known for felt-based wall art, this year’s booth featured cork both as a backing and surface element. This added warmth and tactility to their display, helping the textures speak for themselves in a high-traffic environment. Every component—from the smallest swatch to the largest wall panel—was chosen for contrast, scale, and clarity.

Scaling a Booklet into Architecture

One of the most distinctive features of the booth was its visual reference to Submaterial’s swatch book. Designed originally for Material Bank, this vertical booklet was expanded into an architectural concept. By scaling the swatches into wall-mounted samples, visitors could immediately grasp how each texture and component related to the final product. It also gave Submaterial’s team a practical tool for storytelling, pointing out modular combinations and customization options with ease.

Angles That Invite, Not Intimidate

Photo Creds: Jenna Bascom Photography

Rather than using standard right angles, David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd.’s team fabricated slanted walls to create an inviting, gallery-like enclosure. This angled configuration provided privacy for discussion without fully closing the space off. Plus, it created additional surfaces for display—both inside the booth and on the outward-facing walls. The result: a high-functioning space that felt like a showroom, not just a display.

Design Collaboration Done Right

After the show, the David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd., team returned to dismantle and safely transport the booth elements back to the shop. This closeout phase was part of their white-glove, end-to-end service, ensuring that everything could be reused, repurposed, or reinstalled in the future.

Submaterial didn’t have to worry about teardown logistics, freight handling, or repackaging. They could focus on what they do best: designing heirloom-quality products.

Project Spotlight: Custom Sea Island Resort Sign

Every standout space deserves an equally standout sign. For Sea Island Resort, David G. Flatt Furniture, Ltd brought that principle to life, crafting a custom entrance piece that is bold, elegant, and designed to last.

Here’s how the project came together from start to finish.

Starting with a Vision: Digital Rendering

Before the sawdust, there was the screen. The Sea Island sign began with a 3D rendering, providing the client with a true-to-life preview of proportions, lettering, and materials. This first step wasn’t just about approval—it was about precision. With a classic arch-top silhouette and flowing script font, the rendering established the design intent and served as the technical blueprint for all future work.

Precision Matters: CNC Cut Components

With the rendering finalized, the team moved on to fabrication, utilizing CNC cutting, which is ideal for both custom furniture and signage. Each part of the sign, from the main panel to the leg supports, was cut to exact dimensions. CNC allowed us to maintain the delicate curves of the frame while ensuring repeatability across parts. This approach is crucial in both modern design services and event furniture rentals, where consistency is key.

Primer Coat: Smooth and Seamless

Before color comes primer. The entire structure was coated in a clean white base. This even surface is essential for two reasons: paint adhesion and tone clarity. It neutralizes the material below, ensuring the final color remains accurate and vibrant year after year, even in outdoor conditions. At this stage, we inspect every detail—no texture issues, no hidden imperfections.

Custom Green: Branding Meets Durability

Next came color. The custom-mixed green was formulated to match Sea Island’s brand aesthetic—rich, natural, and inviting. Applied in stages, the paint went on evenly with no drips, blemishes, or tonal inconsistencies. Even the platform base was sprayed to ensure total visual continuity. The result? A finish that looks as good in year five as it does on day one.

Dimensional Details: Metallic Gold Lettering

The showstopper is the lettering. The Sea Island name was rendered in metallic gold, inset perfectly into the painted surface. These letters catch and reflect ambient light, giving the sign a luxurious glow. In resort settings where first impressions are everything, these subtle details have a significant impact, transforming a sign into an experience.

Veselka Williamsburg: A Custom Build Rooted in Craft and Culture

At David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd, we don’t just build furniture; we build identity.

Our team had the opportunity to collaborate on the newest Veselka location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, completed in March 2024. Working from the architectural plans submitted by Veselka’s long-time design partners and alongside Ridgeline Construction, we were proud to bring our craftsmanship and CNC capabilities to one of New York’s most iconic Ukrainian restaurants.

Counter Fabrication with Durable Laminate & Style

We designed, fabricated, and installed the long service counter that anchors the restaurant’s layout. This piece features layered laminate surfaces—both burgundy and cream—trimmed with precision and built for heavy daily use. The chrome-accented stools and stepped counter edge speak to a classic diner influence, but our build was modern, clean, and made to last.

Custom Wall Paneling and Cabinetry

Our shop produced all the oak wall paneling and built-in wall cabinets you see throughout the space. Using high-quality materials and tight-grain finishes, we ensured the warmth of wood didn’t just sit in the background—it became part of the identity of the room. Every panel was mitered, jointed, and sealed with care to give a clean and continuous finish.

Banquette Seating that Defines the Space

We fabricated the custom wood banquettes from scratch—each one laid out to fit the exact footprint of the interior. These were designed for comfort, efficiency, and visual cohesion. Set against Veselka’s brick and oak walls, they form strong architectural lines and natural divisions between zones of seating.

CNC-Cut Details That Elevate the Everyday

One of the highlights of this project was the subtle wood inlay work in the privacy partitions. We used our CNC cutting technology to engrave and pattern botanical shapes directly into oak panels, adding a quiet decorative layer that feels both playful and refined. Our CNC services gave us total control over depth, spacing, and repeatability at scale.

Everything Built to Work—Not Just Look Good

Behind the scenes, we also built functional wall cabinetry and under-counter structures to support Veselka’s service flow. We’re always thinking about longevity, stability, and ease of use—especially in fast-paced food environments.

A Space That Reflects the Brand

Veselka Williamsburg is full of bold visual cues—from vibrant murals to backlit signage. Our work was designed to frame, support, and enhance that storytelling. The wood tones bring warmth, the seating offers structure, and the surfaces are built to hold up over time.

Sloomoo Chicago Exhibit: A Truly Unforgettable Sensory Experience

Step inside, and you’ll feel it — Sloomoo Chicago isn’t your average exhibit.

Here’s a breakdown of what makes this immersive sensory wonderland stand out, especially through the lens of David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd., the engineering and fabrication force behind key design features like tactile walls, kinetic sand tables, and digital display mounts.

Touch-Centric Design That Sparks Emotion

Froofroo’s Feels, one of the exhibit’s central attractions, invites visitors to physically interact with a series of textures embedded in sculptural, CNC-cut panels. Every hand-sized pod is different — furry, rubbery, bumpy, or slick — and each one represents a different emotion or sensory reaction. This isn’t just decoration; it’s a deeply intentional use of touch to promote emotional awareness. David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd., engineered and fabricated these curvy white sensory walls with precision, ensuring structural integrity while maintaining a playful flow.

Custom-Built Digital Interfaces

Mounted throughout the exhibit are touchscreen displays with engaging content, all set inside amoeba-shaped enclosures. These screen stations aren’t off-the-shelf solutions — they’re framed with custom mounts fabricated to blend into the fantastical aesthetic of the space. Each touchpoint is an invitation to meet your “Sloomoo Sidekick,” guiding visitors on a playful personality journey. It’s a great example of how tech and tactile can co-exist with seamless design support.

The Kinetic Sand Zone: Built to Engage

A glowing room with neon-painted walls and a sculptural sand table catches every eye. This table, designed and fabricated by David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd., anchors one of the most kinetic experiences in the space. The organic form of the table invites multiple participants at once, promoting collaborative play, while the overhead mirrored bowls and UV lighting add a surreal dimension. The entire setup is engineered to withstand constant use, because once kids (and adults) get their hands in the sand, they don’t want to stop.

Strategic Use of CNC Cutting

From the amoeba-style screen mounts to the flowing tactile wall elements, CNC cutting was key to achieving the fluid, blob-like shapes that define the exhibit’s look. Precision was critical. David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd. used its advanced CNC services to ensure clean curves and consistent shapes across materials, translating a wild artistic vision into a real-world build that could be assembled on-site with minimal disruption.

Commercial Design With Durability

Though this is a space aimed at fun, the commercial-level durability behind each piece matters. Everything from the sand tables to the wall installations had to be fabricated for repeated use in a high-traffic environment. David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd. balanced creativity with long-term wearability, helping Sloomoo maintain its interactive integrity day after day. Learn more about our commercial capabilities!

Designing Dress To’s Booth for Coterie 2024

A room with several dresses on display.

Thrilled to bring Dress To’s vibrant energy to life at this year’s Coterie Trade Show, David G. Flatt Furniture Ltd was honored to design a booth that encapsulates the style, spirit, and energy of Rio de Janeiro. From concept to completion, every detail of the booth was crafted to create an inviting and memorable experience. Here’s how we brought this vision to life:

A room filled with lots of dresses on display.

Capturing the Spirit of Rio

The Dress To collection is a celebration of vibrant colors, bold prints, and the effervescent energy of Rio. The booth design embraced this essence with a tropical-inspired aesthetic, including peach and blush tones, gold racks, and greenery accents. This color palette and choice of materials gave the space warmth and vibrancy while staying true to the brand’s identity.

A Thoughtful and Functional Layout

Designing a layout that balanced aesthetics with practicality was key. The booth featured clearly defined spaces for clothing displays, a central seating area for conversations, and ample walkways for easy browsing. This functional approach encouraged foot traffic while providing a welcoming atmosphere for buyers to explore the collection comfortably.

Showcasing Key Pieces

The centerpiece of the booth was a display of mannequins dressed in Dress To’s signature pieces, carefully curated to highlight the brand’s bold prints and tropical flair. Positioned against a branded backdrop reading “Dress To, Rio de Janeiro,” these pieces created a visual focal point that instantly drew visitors’ attention.

Creating a Comfortable Space for Engagement

A round table with soft, upholstered stools in the center of the booth created a cozy meeting area. This setup provided a space for conversations and business discussions, reflecting Dress To’s approachability and customer focus. The seating area also added a welcoming touch that enhanced the overall visitor experience.

Lighting to Enhance the Experience

Lighting was a crucial element in bringing out the vibrancy of the collection. Warm, diffused lighting highlighted the intricate details of the clothing and accentuated the booth’s color palette. The result was an inviting and visually appealing space that stood out in the bustling environment of the Coterie show.

Finishing Touches for Brand Recognition

Every detail in the booth reinforced the Dress To brand. From the gold-accented racks to the cohesive styling of the displays, the design aimed to leave a lasting impression. Even small touches, like the strategic placement of signage and the consistent use of brand colors, ensured strong visual branding.

A Collaborative and Creative Journey

Bringing this vision to life was a collaborative effort, involving a clear understanding of the Dress To brand and close attention to detail at every stage. From the initial concept to the final execution, the process was fueled by a shared commitment to creating a space that truly reflected the spirit of the collection.
